Jim Wells County Commissioners approved the appointment of Bartolo Guajardo on Wednesday to replace former Pct. 6 Constable Alonzo Lozano, who passed away July 1.

The selection was made after a committee was formed to review possible candidates, Commissioner Javier Garcia said.

The committee members were members of the Jim Wells County Sheriff's Department, Jim Wells County Taskforce and Alice Police Department.

Garcia would not give the names of the individuals on the committee citing work-related issues. The committee recommended Guajardo take over as constable for Pct. 6.

Commissioner Garcia said several candidates had been considered, including Pct. 6 Deputy Constable Johnny Medina and Hector Delgado.

Guajardo, who is currently a code enforcer with the City of Alice, served as constable several years prior to Lozano's term in office. Garcia said Guajardo will begin serving as constable after his bond is finalized and his two-week notice is completed with the City of Alice. Guajardo will serve the remainder of Lozano's term, until elections next year.
