A Calallen toddler was pronounced dead Sunday from an apparent accidental drowning.

Nueces County Sheriff's Department officials said the incident occurred Sunday at about 12:30 p.m. near County Road 73-A and Farm-to-Market Road 624.

The family of 23-month-old Jayden Wyatt Fausnight was outside putting up lights for Christmas decorations when authorities said they momentarily lost sight of the child.

Capt. Paul Rivera said the child was found by his parents unresponsive in a small basin that resembles a well. The water inside the basin was only about 18-20 inches deep, Rivera said.

Authorities said the parents began to give the boy CPR until paramedics arrived. Rivera said paramedics got the boy breathing and transported him to a local hospital where he later died.

The medical examiner's office said it appears the boy died of accidental drowning and the sheriff's department said charges would not be filed against the parents.

"All signs point to it being an accident," Rivera said.

A funeral for Jayden was held Thursday at Messiah Lutheran Church.
