Former Jim Wells County Deputy Vicky Puente cited concerns for her health and her pregnancy as reasons for her resignation last Wednesday, according to a letter received by the Alice Echo-News Journal through a Freedom of Information request.

Puente said in the letter that it was a pleasure working for the department and that she believes she was a good asset as a patrol officer and as an investigator.

"However, given the circumstances, I fear that my health and pregnancy may be at risk," Puente said.

The former deputy began a six-day suspension last week, while she was the subject of an internal investigation.

She resigned two days later from the department.

The investigation, conducted by Sheriff's Department Administrator Ricardo Palacios, concerned the possible violation of a department policy. The Alice Echo-News Journal has filed an FOI request for the particular policy issue in question.

A male deputy with the Jim Wells County Sheriff's Department also resigned the week of Sept. 10 in connection with the alleged policy violation, department attorney Myra Morris confirmed last Friday.

JWC Sheriff Oscar Lopez said previously the internal investigation was connected to a "non-criminal" issue involving department policy, and that it didn't have to do with the public.
