A Calallen High School student has received an award for a project she created that seeks to promote literacy.

Fifteen-year-old Elizabeth Jendrzey, of Girl Scout Troop 9701, received her Silver Award recently for a project she created called "Promoting Children's Literacy." The project addressed the lack of enthusiasm some children have towards reading.

Girl Scout officials said Elizabeth "wanted to foster an early love of the library that would benefit the children who attended by showing them all the library has to offer such as story time, arts and crafts, books, computers and other resources."

The Girl Scout Silver Award project can be undertaken as an individual or with a group, but only after four other requirements are met. If done with a group, a scout must be responsible for a specific part of the project and evaluate her contribution to the project and the group.
