After struggling in their bi-district game last week against Mercedes, the Calallen Wildcats easily handled the Port Lavaca Calhoun Sandcrabs Friday afternoon in Victoria, winning 27-7.

Calallen's impressive defensive performance from the game a week before carried on against Port Lavaca, as the Wildcats allowed just 110 yards in the game.

Senior linebacker Kris Guerrero had 12 tackles in Friday's game along with a fumble recovery, while linebacker Alan Ford recorded his team-leading ninth sack of the season.

Offensively the Wildcats were solid as the running and passing games were effective against the Sandcrab defense.

Junior quarterback Dustin Vaughan put in another good performance for Calallen, completing 12 of 19 passes for 162 yards and three total touchdowns-two passing and one rushing.

Quarterback Jeramie Marek went 4-for-8 with 46 yards, but most of his work was produced in rushing as he led the Wildcats with 64 yards. Marek also caught two passes, including a touchdown reception.

Though both teams went scoreless in the first quarter, Calallen put on an offensive clinic for the Sandcrabs, scoring 21 points in the second quarter.

Junior running back Bryden McClure scored on a 1-yard touchdown run after leaping over a Sandcrab defender to reach the end zone, putting the Wildcats on top, 7-0.

Nearing the end of the second quarter, Calallen had the ball at the Calhoun 6-yard line.

Vaughan made it in to the end zone on the quarterback keeper as the Wildcats went up 14-0.

With 17 seconds left in the first half, Calallen had the ball again. Vaughan threw to McClure, who caught it for a 43-yard touchdown pass, putting the Wildcats well ahead at the half, 21-0.

In the fourth quarter, Marek caught a touchdown pass from Vaughan, putting Calallen ahead 27-0 and locking up the game.

Calallen continued its dominance on defense, allowing the lone score from Calhoun running back Sterling Jones late in the fourth quarter, denying the Wildcats their first shutout of the year.

Calallen advances to the regional semifinals to face the Lake Travis Cavaliers at 7:30 Friday night at Blossom Stadium in San Antonio.

Lake Travis advanced to the regional semifinal Saturday after beating the Kerrville Tivy Antlers, 45-29.
