The suspect, who allegedly shot sheriff's deputy Mark Anthony Martinez, has been identified as 43-year-old Manuel Humberto Perales Jr., sheriff's department officials said.

On Tuesday, the sheriff's department and Alice police continued their investigation by searching the scene of the shooting and taking aerial photos.

"The photos will help us pinpoint where the actual incident occurred," Sgt. Jose Martinez III with the sheriff's department said.

The Jim Wells Sheriff's Department and several law enforcement agencies searched for Perales for eight hours after he fled the scene where Martinez was shot at about 11:45 p.m. Friday in the 700 block of Lara Street, in the Rancho Alegre area.

According to sheriff officials, Deputy Martinez was attempting to stop Perales for a traffic violation, but Perales refused to stop.

Deputy Martinez chased the vehicle Perales was driving and the chase ended on Lara Drive, where gunshots were exchanged.

Martinez was released from a Corpus Christi hospital after undergoing surgery to his groin area from which the bullet was removed, sheriff's officials said.

"Mark (Martinez) is doing well, he is in good condition," Sgt. Martinez said. "He was released from the hospital Saturday evening."

The motive behind Perales allegedly shooting at Deputy Mark Martinez and another deputy, Jason Childers, is not known yet, Sgt. Martinez said.

"Why he shot at him, we need to get the answers from him (Perales), but he is not talking because he is heavily medicated with tubes down his throat," Sgt. Martinez said.

Sgt. Martinez said that Perales has been in prison before, but was not aware of why he was convicted.

Perales is under guard by the sheriff's department and after he recovers from his gunshot wound, he will be arrested and transported to the Jim Wells County jail, Sgt. Martinez said.

Perales is facing two counts of attempted capital murder.
