A police officer and a woman were transported to the local hospital Tuesday morning after an accident at the intersection of Highway 359 and Gulf Street, officials said.

Department of Public Safety officers said the accident happened about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when a white Pontiac Grand Am driven by 21-year-old Alyssa Martinez darted onto Highway 359 where Alice police officer Enrique Saenz was traveling eastbound in his unit.

Officer Saenzís patrol unit collided with the Grand Am and T-boned the vehicle.

Saenz and Martinez were transported to CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice with non-life threatening injuries, officials said.

Citations are pending, but officers said Martinez could receive a ticket for failing to yield the right of way at a stop sign.
