With Dec. 31 fast approaching, the Jim Wells County Appraisal District is urging property owners who want to claim property taxes as a deduction on their 2007 Federal Income Tax Return to pay as soon as possible.

J. Sidney Vela, Chief Appraiser and Tax Assessor/Collector for the Jim Wells County Appraisal District, wants to remind all property owners in the area that 2007 Property Taxes must be paid by Dec. 31 in order to claim them as a deduction on your Federal Income Tax Return.

"Whatever you pay in property taxes, in local property taxes you can deduct it from your Internal Revenue form that you fill out," Vela said. "A lot of people do that."

The Appraisal District office, located at the First Community Bank Building, 1600 E. Main St., Suite 100, in Alice (Entrance is through the West side of the building on Stadium St.) is open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. The Appraisal District office will be closed all day on December 24 and 25 for the Christmas holidays. The office will remain open during the noon hour on December 26, 27, 28 and 31.

Taxpayers are urged to not wait until the last day, as lines are expected to be long at the tax office.

"We want to encourage them to come early, because what happens is the lines are very long because people wait," Vela said. "It doesn't bother us if they wait until the last day, but I'm trying to keep them from having to wait an hour or more."

Payments sent in by mail must be addressed to P.O. Box 607, Alice, Texas 78333-0607. If sent in by mail the postmark, by the Post Office, must be no later than December 31, 2007.
