Alice City Manager Albert Uresti appointed Hector Hinojosa as the Interim-Assistant City Manager Friday, six months after Hinojosa was hired as the city's finance director.

The appointment will be effective Dec. 29, and Hinojosa will become the full-time assistant city manager once the finance director position is filled, Uresti said. Until that position is filled, Hinojosa will continue in his role as finance director in addition to his duties as interim-assistant city manager.

"We feel we've stabilized the city government here in town. We feel like we have a pretty good handle on what's going on," Uresti said. "Now, for me to be able to take the city to the next level I need to begin filling all my spots."

Uresti said he hopes to fill the open positions of human resources director and public works director, as well as the finance director position in the new year.

Hinojosa was appointed by the city council as finance director on June 11, but Uresti said he had the authority to re-appoint Hinojosa without council approval.

"I have the authority to appoint all positions without council approval, with the exception of the municipal judge and the city attorney," Uresti said.

This is not the first time in his career that Hinojosa has moved from a finance director position to administration.

In December 1989, Hinojosa was hired as an accountant with the City of Kingsville, and six months later was promoted to finance director. He served as the interim city manager and finance director for a period of time before he was appointed as city manager in March 1999.

His employment was terminated by the city in 2003.

In October 2006, Hinojosa was hired as the finance director for the City of Driscoll, a position he held until he was hired by the City of Alice in June.

On Friday, Hinojosa said he was looking forward to working for the city in his new capacity.

"I've been looking forward to this position. I'm glad, and when we work together, Uresti and I seem to be on the same page," Hinojosa said.

"I feel I have the qualifications and experience, and hopefully the know-how."
