PREMONT - The Premont High School Cowboy marching band will feature several soloists at the UIL Region Marching Contest in Sinton Saturday.

"We have been working hard for this," said band director Ernesto Cortez. "They have a great attitude and have a lot of fun."

Kayla Cavazos, one of the soloists in the marching band, said the long hours of practice before and after school will pay off at the competition.

"Since we are a small band, we have to make sure it's done precisely," she said. "We are probably known for our sound."

The theme for the contest show is "Mangione Magic." The band will perform four selections. The first selection is "Land of Make Believe," which features senior trumpet player Christina Barrera and freshman alto sax player Daniel Barrera.

The second piece is "Children of Sanchez," which also features Christina on trumpet, a tenor saxophone duet by senior drum major Kayla and junior Timothy Benavides and a bell solo by junior Valerie Smith. The third selection is "El Gato Triste." This song highlights freshman clarinetist Leslie Gomes. The band is under the field direction of senior drum major San Juanita Garcia. And the fourth music piece is "Echano," which is a percussion feature.

The marching band, which consists of 30 students, will strut their way into the Sinton High School stadium Saturday at 1 p.m. during the UIL Region Marching Contest, hoping to advance.

"We hope we will make a first division and we can go to area, which will be held in San Antonio," Cortez said. "We would like to go on to state, that's our goal - that's everybody's goal."

The PHS Cowboy Band is under the direction of Cortez, Hector Cantu, assistant director, and percussionist instructor Robert Gonzalez, from Robstown. The event is open to the public. Admission is $3 a person. Cortez said the support of the community has been great.

"I would like to invite the residents of Premont to come out and support us," he said.

"I would also like to thank the parents, the faculty and administration."
