Amanda Chapa lines up the shot just right as she hits one of the white balls and makes it into the pocket on the other side of the table during a game of bumper pool at the Boys and Girls Club Monday.

"I'm good at this, right?" Amanda asked as she held the cue stick and balanced it on her small thumb.

Amanda is one of about 125 children ages five to 18 who participate in the Boys and Girls Club summer program on a daily basis. Along with activities such as pool, ping-pong, arts and crafts and educational computer games, the children are treated to field trips that include attending the movie theatre, bowling and swimming. The club is open to the members from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The cost for each is $25 per month. Drop-in fee is $7 a day. During the summer months, participants are also fed through the lunch program at a nearby school.

"I don't think we have gotten this many kids before," said recreation supervisor Michael Escobar. "This is our biggest so far."

Jeremy Buentello, 9, said he likes to play all of the games.

"I like to play ping-pong, pool and bumper pool also arts and crafts and swim outside," Jeremy said.

Marina Rojas, 12, said this is the second year she has joined to pass the summer.

"The best thing I like here is playing pool and meeting new friends and the staff," she said. "I like to help the staff with the young kids."

She said when she gets older she aspires to become a staff member. Many children like Juan Perez, 12, say the Boys and Girls Club keeps them from staying home alone.

"I come here because (my parents) work and I like coming here," he said. "It's fun."
