A 74-year-old man was hospitalized Friday in critical condition after being hit by a motorcycle while trying to cross the road.
Lt. Danny Simmons with the Corpus Christi Police Department said James Peterson was trying to cross Northwest Boulevard in his motorized wheelchair at about 7 a.m. Friday when he was struck by a blue 2006 Triumph motorcycle being driven westbound by 52-year-old Ronnie Garcia.
Garcia was thrown from his motorcycle, as was Peterson from his wheelchair, which was torn in half from the impact, police said. The motorcycle came to rest on a shoulder in front of the entrance to a Wells Fargo Bank, police said.
Simmons said it didn't appear that Garcia was driving recklessly when the accident occurred.
"It was dark out here (at the time)," he said. "It doesn't appear that excessive speed was a factor."
Peterson was transported to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi in critical condition. As of Monday, Peterson remained in intensive care in serious condition.
Ronnie Garcia, who was also transported to the hospital, has since been released, hospital officials said.
