The Alice Fire Department held a swearing-in ceremony for two new firefighters Monday at the Alice City Hall.

Alice Municipal Judge Edie Gonzalez-Lemon presided over the swearing-in ceremony and led new firefighters Daryl Kallio and Matthew Scheible in the oath.

Alice Fire Chief Dean Van Nest said the two men will be important additions to his team.

"Both of them come to us with experience in volunteer firefighting," Dean Nest said.

City Manager Albert Uresti, who is a former firefighter, also welcomed the two new firefighters to the city.

"This is probably one of the best professions in the world," Uresti said. "This is a very challenging position.

"I look for you all to carry on the tradition of making the citizens of this city proud."

Both of the new firefighters are graduates of the Del Mar Fire Fighter Academy in Corpus Christi.

Kallio, who is from Dilley, Texas, said his father was a volunteer firefighter for more than 20 years, so he grew up learning about the job.

"It's something I've always wanted to do," Kallio said. "I got into it and decided it was something I wanted to do."

Scheible, a Bishop native, said he has always been interested in being a firefighter, and he is looking forward to pursuing that career in Alice.

"I like it," Scheible said. "I'm excited about working here."
