A 19-year-old Ben Bolt man died Tuesday after he was pinned beneath a forklift while working at the new Tractor Supply Inc. store on Highway 44 east of Alice.

Jim Wells County Sheriff's Department Lt. Joe Martinez confirmed the death Wednesday, and identified the victim as Miguel Gomez, 19.

Witnesses at the scene reportedly told investigators that shortly before 4 p.m., Gomez was driving a forklift in an open area filled with merchandise beside the store when he lost control of the vehicle.

The forklift fell onto its side, pinning Gomez, witnesses said.

Store employees were able to use another machine to free Gomez from beneath the vehicle, Martinez said, but Gomez was non-responsive.

He was transported by ambulance to CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice, and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Martinez said the sheriff's department is treating the incident as an industrial accident, and a full investigation is pending.

The Alice Tractor Supply Inc. store opened its doors on March 21, just over one month ago. The store employs 19 full- and part-time employees.
