The 229th District Clerk's office released the names of 19 individuals who were indicted recently for a number of sex-related crimes, as part of a special focus by the district attorney's office.

The charges range from indecency with a child to aggravated sexual assault, and include some incidents that are nearly 10 years old.

Assistant District Attorney Jon West said Friday he presented the cases to the grand jury as a group to allow the grand jury to totally focus on the charges.

"I think a significant number of these cases will be 'date rape' cases, which are notoriously difficult to prosecute," West said. "I think with these types of cases, we need to make sure the grand jury was going to be able to focus on the nature of the evidence presented and the nature of the charges that were presented."

West said that although some of the cases are nearly 10 years old, he believed they deserve to be heard in court.

"Our first and foremost priority is the protection of women and children," West said. "I think a community is judged on the way it protects its children."
