A Robstown native who was recently inducted into the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame was honored last week during a Nueces County Commissioner's Court meeting.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Oscar Ortiz, whose precinct includes Robstown, read a proclamation for Tomas "Tonka" Velasquez, now in his 60s, that recognized Velasquez "for his many musical contributions to South Texas and Nueces County."

"I've known him since we were kids when we were running down the streets and alleys of Robstown," Ortiz said Monday. "I'm glad to see that he's been successful. I know coming from Robstown this is a good training ground for conjuntos."

Velasquez is a veteran of the conjunto circuit, having been a singer, songwriter and arranger for more than 20 years. He has played with musical groups like Massizo, Los Chachos, Tony De La Rosa, Juan Sifuentes and Tonka y Libre.

After the proclamation was read, Velasquez addressed the court and expressed his gratitude for the recognition being bestowed upon him.

"This is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life," Velasquez said.
