Alice ISD students will get a day off this week, as teachers conduct a staff development day on Friday.
Last year, the school district held three staff development days during the week of the Jim Wells County Fair.
Students were off Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. But because of the state-mandated change in the school year schedule, with classes beginning no earlier than Aug. 27, it was necessary to move as many staff development days as possible, to make room for normal school days, AISD Director of Personnel Javier Cavazos said Tuesday.
"The district gave up several days this semester, including those in October, November and even some during Christmas break for the new calendar," Cavazos said.
He said those students out of class for fair activities this week will still be counted as present on campus because they will be at the fair under the supervision of district FFA teachers and Jim Wells County Extension Agents, who are considered adjunct faculty during the week of the fair.
All students, though, will be off on Friday, Cavazos said.
