PREMONT - Premont ISD superintendent David Garza has accepted a position with the Laredo Independent School District and will begin his new job on Monday.
The school board is planning a special meeting at 6 p.m. Friday to accept his resignation and possibly appoint an interim superintendent.
"Basically, I've accepted a position in Laredo," Garza said Tuesday. "It's a bitter-sweet situation because I've been here for 25 years. It's a great opportunity for me. I'll be starting on Monday."
Garza said he was hired as the executive director of curriculum and instruction for the Laredo Independent School District and will be working in the central office as an administrator.
Garza would not comment on his new salary, but did say the money was not an issue.
"It's not about the money," he said. "My wife's family lives in Laredo."
School board President Olga Ramirez said the special meeting was scheduled for Thursday, but conflicTs among board members forced the meeting to be re-scheduled for Friday instead.
"We might as well let him go and God be with him," Ramirez said. "There are individuals that have worked with him for 25 years and a lot of people are loyal to him.
"And I know it's tough, but maybe this is what the district needs; we can only go forward."
Premont ISD has struggled academically in recent years, with campuses failing to meet state and federal standards.
