A 12-year-old boy was taken by HALO-Flight to Corpus Christi for treatment.
The boy suffered injuries after being struck by a vehicle in front of the junior high school Sunday afternoon about 5:15 p.m., according to police reports.
The accident occurred as the boy was attempting to cross Hwy. 16 South in front of a Ford Expedition, which was being driven by Benjamin Townsend, 22, of Freer, police reports indicate.
Reports say the driver first observed kids on skateboards crossing the highway from the east side, then suddenly saw the bike cross and was unable to avoid contact.
The victim was flown to Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi for further medical treatment with undetermined injuries, reports say.
According to reports, the driver of the vehicle had no proof of liability insurance.
Police Chief John Spillers said no other charges would be filed at this time, but the investigation is still ongoing.
Lead investigating officer was Jim Andrazyack.
Assisting at the scene were Freer EMS and Texas State DPS troopers.
