After 45 years practicing medicine in Alice, Dr. Mauricio Bandeira Teixeira is retiring.

Teixeira  was recently diagnosed with cancer of the maxillary - facial area.

The doctor traveled to MD Anderson in Houston. After consultation with several doctors, they recommended chemotherapy and surgery that would be followed by six weeks of radiation.

"Naturally, this treatment has made me a relatively disable person unable to resume my regular general surgery practice, Dr. Teixeira stated. "I have been officially unable to practice medicine since March 2018."

Teixeira, a native of Brazil, came to the U.S. to further his medical training and granted permanent immigrant status. He was a military doctor during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1971 and discharged from the U.S. Army as a major. He received many honors including the Bronze Star and was granted citizenship when he returned to the U.S.

Teixeira started his medical practice in Alice in 1973 with the Alice Physicians and Surgeons Hospital which served as a trauma unit. Since he had extensive experience treating trauma cases in Vietnam, Teixeira was frequently on call. With about 500 surgical cases a year, he has made a difference in the area by saving lives.

Teixeira has received numerous awards including the American Association Physicians Recognition, the State of Texas Humanitarian Award, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He has served as Hospital Chief of Staff, Chief of Surgery, Representative of CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice to the Texas Medical Association and he is a member of the advisory board of CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital in Alice.

"I significantly appreciate having had the opportunity of taking care of my good patients," Teixeira stated. "I will do my very best to provide additional information as needed."

Patient records should be found at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice where Teixeira conducted his surgeries. A request for records can also be submitted at P.O. Box 1211, Alice, Texas 78332 with a official notification request.
