SAN DIEGO - The only pharmacy in Duval County closed its doors on Wednesday, June 27 after 50 years of service.
Adolfo S. Montemayor, owner of La Hacienda Pharmacy, started his career as a Pharmacist in 1966 after he received his degree from University of Texas College of Pharmacy.
He began his career in Alice in 1963 as he worked for Garcia Drugs. For two years he built his experience and knowledge.
"You know I didn't really have experience," Montemayor said. "Yes, I got some at the university, but it's never exactly the real thing, working in the real world. I needed to study under someone as I built my experience and customer service."
Montemayor worked under Dr. Dunlap in San Diego at the Hacienda Clinic until he took over. His wife, Maria Antonia Montemayor, joined him in the business when they moved to their location on Dr. Dunlap Street in December of 1999 to be closer to the clinic.
"We hate to close," the Montemayors' said. "We've been here for a long time with loyal customers. Plus many of our elderly customers had a hard time getting to Alice for their prescriptions so we were convenient for them cause anyone could pick up their medications. It's going to be hard on them now, but we've been working too long. It's time for us to retire."
The Montemayors', who have been married for nearly 56 years, plan to enjoy their leisure time at the ranch with their horses and cattle. They would like to visit their grandchildren more.
Before the last prescriptions were filled and picked up the City of San Diego and Duval County officials visited the pharmacy presenting them with a plaque of gratitude and goodies.
