Jim Wells County has encountered significant and ongoing threat of loss to life, health and property due to inclement weather events beginning June 19, 2018. The inclement weather consisted of torrential rain resulting in over 10 to 13 inches of rain in and around Jim Wells County, Texas resulting in significant residential flooding, severe property damage, and dangerous travel conditions.
Throughout the past few days of torrential rains and inclement weather Jim Wells County has been working diligently with County Commissioners, City Officials, Jim Wells County Sheriff's Department along with State and local law enforcement agencies, and our Regional Emergency Management Coordinator. We have also requested assistance and support from our State Representative, M Lozano, Senator, Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa, and US Congressman, Filemon Vela.
The severity of the damages endured from this weather event has posed significate threat and an effective response for recovery is beyond the capability of local jurisdiction. Pursuant to $433.001 of the Texas Government Code, Jim Well County has requested that Texas Governor Greg Abbott declare a state of emergency and a disaster, and issue appropriate directives to deal with the emergency; including monies for the restoration of homes affected by flood damage, and/or loss of livestock, and property damage.
Currently the Jim Wells County Office of Emergency Management is conducting Damage Assessments for possible assistance. All Jim Wells County residents and businesses outside the city limits of Alice, Texas that have sustained damages to your home, business or property please report these damages by contacting your County Commissioner.
