A 61-year-old Robstown woman died after the truck she was riding in was struck by an 18-wheeler at the intersection of North Highway 281 and County Road 116 Sunday evening.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) investigated a three vehicle accident that occurred at approximately 8:35 p.m. approximately two miles west of Alice.

According to Sgt. Nathan Brandley with DPS, the preliminary investigation revealed that a 2012 Peterbuilt 18-wheeler and a 2016 18-wheeler were traveling north on Highway 281 in the right lane when the driver of a 1997 Mazda pickup, who was traveling east on CR 116 failed to yield the right of way at the stop sign.

The driver of the 18-wheeler unable to avoid the pickup and struck it in the right passenger’s side.

The pickup truck rolled multiple times to the right of Highway 281 and ended in the bar ditch.

Jim Wells County deputies arrived on the scene. They removed the occupants of the pickup truck. They spoke with the driver before he was transported by EMS to  Christus Spohn Shoreline in Corpus Christi with serious injuries. 

Dalia Ayala Vasquez was the passenger of the pickup truck. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The driver of Peterbuilt truck tractor-semi trailer was treated and released at the scene.

Troopers are still investigating the crash.
