A 23-year-old man who was in custody of the Jim Wells County jail died Thursday evening after a correctional officer found him unresponsive, according to JWC Sheriff Daniel Bueno.
Marcus Soza was arrested on Wednesday, Jan. 31 for manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance during a traffic stop.
On Thursday, Feb. 1 at approximately 11:22 p.m., a security check was conducted. The correctional officer came upon Soza unresponsive, according to the Sheriff. He was alone in his holding cell. According to the sheriff, jailers conduct security checks every 30 minutes per policy.
Jailers and nurse staff immediately began working on Soza and contacted EMS who transported Soza to the hospital where he later died.
The case is being investigated by the Texas Rangers Division.
"It's an unfortunate incident. Next of kin has been notified," Bueno stated. "Jail standards were immediately notified. We are cooperating with the Texas Rangers on this lengthy investigation."
