Two men from McAllen were arrested on Wednesday when a Jim Wells County K9 Officer alerted his handler to a large sum of US currency.

The drug interdiction officer conducted a traffic stop on a 2011 Chevy Malibu south of County Road 433 near Premont just as his shift was about to end.

When the officer conducted roadside interviews with 22-year-old Luis Rios and 20-year-old Vicente Vargas he became suspicious of their stories. The men told the officer they were headed back to McAllen from Houston.

Rios, the driver, and Vargas, owner of the vehicle and passenger, refused to give the officer consent to a vehicle search. Using his K9 to the a perimeter search of the vehicle.

When the K9 officer alerted his handler Rios and Vargas were detained.

A search of the vehicle by the interdiction officer led to the discovery of $30,005 inside the center console.

The men were booked into the JWC jail and charged with money laundering more than or equal to $30,000 but less than $150,000.
