J. Sidney Vela, Chief Appraiser of the Jim Wells County Appraisal District, is issuing a reminder to all property owners. “Anyone who has not, as yet, paid their 2017 Property Taxes must do so by Wednesday, January 31, 2018 to avoid having late fee penalties and interest charges added to their tax bill.”

State law requires any 2017 Property Taxes not paid by Wednesday, January 31, 2018 to be considered delinquent. The delinquent tax bill must then have an additional “7% Penalty and Interest Charge” added to the tax bill beginning on Thursday, February 1, 2018, for the month of February. “Penalty Charges” continue to increase monthly to a maximum of 12%; “Interest Charges” continue increasing at a rate of 1% per month, for each and every month, until the delinquent tax bill is paid in full. All outstanding delinquent accounts will ultimately be turned over to a Delinquent Tax Collection Law Firm for legal action, which will add an additional 15% to 20%, or more, to the taxpayer’s bill, due to the added costs of “Attorney’s Fees” and “Court Costs”. As a last resort, the delinquent taxpayer could have their property sold at public auction.

The Appraisal District office is located inside the 1st Community Bank Building in Alice, 1600 E. Main St., Suite #100. The office’s entrance is through the West side of the building on Stadium St. and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays. The Appraisal District office will remain open during the noon hour beginning Monday, January 29th through Wednesday, January 31st.

“Taxpayers are urged: “Don’t’ Wait Until The Last Day”, to make your payment”, as lines are expected to be long and you may end up waiting in line 30 to 45 minutes, or more, to make your payment on your account(s). Payments may also be paid with a credit card, for an additional fee, on the Appraisal District’s Internet Web site “jimwellscad.org” or you can mail in a check or money order to P.O. Box 607, Alice, Texas 78333-0607. Mail-in payments must be post marked, by the United States Post Office, no later than Wednesday, January 31, 2018 to avoid a late fee charge.
