K-9 Ardo, with the sheriff's department only one week, assisted his handler with a money seizure of $39,060 Monday afternoon.
The deputy stopped a driver in a white Chevy compact vehicle for a traffic violation just south of Ben Bolt on Highway 281 about 3 p.m.
As he was interviewing the couple, the deputy became suspicious and that's when he noticed a Guess purse in the back seat of the vehicle and asked consent to search.
The deputy opened the purse and noticed the purse was modified with an extra compartment.
“It you see the zipper at the edge and open it up very carefully,” said Sheriff Daniel Bueno. “The stitching was professionally done.”
That's where the money was located with the help of Ardo.
Cousins, Katalina Castaneda, 22 and Victor Rivera, 29, were arrested and charged with money laundering. Both are from the Valley.
Bueno said since September, the department has netted half-million dollars in their interdiction campaign.
“My investment was good,” Bueno said of the newly purchased K-9 Ardo. “This in itself paid for both dogs and the training.”
