Seventeen years in education and going started from one teacher's favorite movie, Indian Jones.

William Adams Middle School History teacher Becky Lutzke was awarded the October Amazing Teacher Award on behalf of Alice Echo News Journal and Bowden Ford of Alice.

Lutzke's love of history started with her father and his interesting tips about the places they visited throughout her childhood.

"When I watched Indian Jones, my favorite movie, for the first time I realized that I could teach history and enjoy other adventures history had in store for me," Lutzke said. "I've had other offers outside of teaching, but my students keep me here."

Lutzke was nominated for the award by her student Ember Cavazos.

"While I was worried about this being a hard class, Ms. Lutzke makes learning social studies easy and fun," Cavazos wrote in her nomination.

Lutzke teaches social studies and para GT at WAMS. She's been at the campus for eight years and taught at Gregory - Portland for nine years.

"It's awesome to know that one of my own student nominated me," she said. "It's the ultimate goal. I know the work I'm doing is having an effect on them...It's an awesome feeling."
