Alice ISD employees saved the district approximately $30,000 over the summer session as they took matters into their own hands and beautified the campuses, according to Willie Ruiz, director of operations at Alice ISD.
Summer session for school employees usually means vacation time or at least less work. Not for the employees at Alice ISD; the maintenance, bus drivers, transportation department, security guards and custodial employees used their summer to beautify the campuses.
At William Adams Middle School, employees fixed holes and the retainer wall on the perimeter of the campus was rebuilt. At Schallert Elementary, employees addressed safety concerns to the playground area. Salazar Elementary's portable buildings were repainted and scrubs were removed while employees went to Alice HS to make one classroom into two with a wall.
According to Ruiz, the employees worked long and hard to get the campuses ready before the start of the new school year.
Alice ISD students will head back to class on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
