According to the affidavits filed at the City of Alice for the proposed recall of council members Yolando Moran and Elida Garza, the list of 20 residents seeking signatures includes a former council candidate.

Michael Wohl, who was third in the May 6th race for Place 2 on the city council, is one of the 20 Alice registered voters who submitted an affidavit to help collect the signatures needed to hold a recall referendum on Moran and Garza. Wohl was third behind Garza and former incumbent Pete Beltran.

The others who submitted affidavits were Cynthia G. Loera, Dora Yvonne Barrera, Fernando Casas Jr., Lucy Gloria Cruz, Randall Wayne Dickens, Diego Hinojosa, Margarita Beltran Longoria, Merlinda Rodriguez, Dorothy G. Vela, Blanca Estella Castillo-Garcia, Roel Adrian Rodriguez, Rudy Cruz, Noris N. Lerma, Maria Alecia Reyna, Ramon A. Reyna, Joel Ruiz, Manuel Alfaro, Emerald Alfaro and Cynthia Garcia Mata.

Loera and Dickens hand-delivered the affidavits to City of Alice clerk Diana Lopez Tuesday afternoon.

According to each of the affidavits, the alleged “incompetence, misconduct or malfeasance” of the council members was “The act of voting to approve the opening of the Alice Natatorium without conducting a financial or operational due diligence nor determining the financial effect on the City of Alice taxpayers, including but not limited to where the money was coming from; was there ample funds in the adopted budget and without amending the budget in order to support the cost of opening the operation of the Alice Natatorium.”

Lopez said once the affidavits are reviewed, each will receive a recall petition to gather signatures. According to the City of Alice, those seeking the recall have 60 days to collect 100 signatures for each council member they seek to recall. Those signing the petition must be registered to vote in the City of Alice, however, they don’t have to have voted in the May 6 election.

With the needed signatures, the city would set up a referendum where voters would decide to recall or not recall either candidate.
