Local high school students participated in the 2016 – 2017 Coastal Bend Blood Center's High School Hero Challenge. Out of the 12 local schools who competed Freer HS earned first place in the 2A division.

The year-long competition separates high schools based on size and encourages them to collect the highest number of blood donations for the division.

There were 250 blood drives at 51 schools in the Coastal Bend.

Alice – 593 units of blood

Calallen – 425 units of blood

Tuloso-Midway – 406 units of blood

4A division -

Orange Grove – 242 units of blood

Robstown – 131 units of blood

3A division -

Banquete – 85 units of blood

San Diego – 224 units of blood

2A division -

Agua Dulce – 42 units of blood

Benavides – 75 units of blood

Ben Bolt – 108 units of blood

Freer – 256 units of blood

Premont – 50 units of blood

A total of 12,192 units of blood was collected for the challenge.
