Sheriff department's full time employees received a five percent across the board raise with drug forfeiture funds on Monday.
“We are allowed to supplement from the drug forfeiture fund,” said Jim Wells County Sheriff Daniel Bueno. “We have lost some officers to larger cities for better pay.”
The raise was effective on Monday, May 8.
On Monday, the Commissioners' Court by a 3-0 vote approved the five percent raise. Money from the drug forfeiture fund is allowed through Chapter 59.6
Bueno said a total of $134,000 increase in salaries is for his 72 full time employees including correctional officers, deputies, administration, dispatchers and clerks. The increase does not include Sheriff Bueno since he is an elected official.
Bueno said the increase will be introduced again in September when the budget is proposed for the new fiscal year.
Commissioner Carlos Gonzalez was not at the meeting due to attending a funeral.
