Alice police and firemen responded to numerous reports of downed trees and power lines Sunday morning as a powerful storm brought unusually strong winds across South Texas.

According to the National Weather Service, sustained winds of more than 30 mph were being reported, as well as strong gusts of more than 50 mph.

AEP reported early Sunday that downed power outages affected 289 customers in Alice.

The wind is expected to continue through the day and begin to subside after 5 p.m.
