Inez Knox Stegall, 90, of Alice, Texas, passed away January 7, 2017. Inez was born in Tyler, Texas on November 12, 1926, to Letha (Turner) and William Knox. When she was a little girl, Inez and her family moved to the Rio Grande Valley, where she would graduate from San Benito High School, attend college in Brownsville, and meet and marry her husband of almost 60 years, James Aubrey Stegall.
Inez and James moved to Alice, Texas in 1957. They purchased a Piggly Wiggly, later renaming it the Stegall Food Center. Inez and James went on to own and operate two liquor stores: while James ran J&L Discount Liquor on Highway 281, Inez was the proud owner and operator of the Jigger, a full-service liquor store located on Texas Boulevard. She enjoyed her many years as a woman business owner in the community, and after much coaxing by her family finally retired and sold the business in 2000. Not one to stay idle, Inez then focused her energy on volunteering with the Women’s Auxiliary of Alice Christus Spohn Hospital, where she enjoyed working in (some might say running!) the Gift Shop. She also actively participated in many ministries at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, where she was a parishioner for 60 years.
Inez enjoyed traveling, in particular her ladies’ trips to Las Vegas and family summer vacations to South Padre Island. Inez loved watching football at all levels, holding season tickets for the Alice Coyotes for over 50 years, and refusing to let anyone change the television channel if any college football game could be found, even while in the hospital during her last days on Earth. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, managing to teach all of them (as well as some of her great-grandchildren) how to play gin rummy well, yet never well enough to beat her! Inez’s fierce competitive spirit was on display at her 90th birthday party this past November, where her family gathered to celebrate her life and play a little bingo in honor of her milestone day.
Inez is survived by her three children, son James Aubrey Stegall, Jr. (Patricia) of Corpus Christi, daughter Cynthia Ann Stegall Felder of Bishop, and son Michael Wayne Stegall (Ernie Gottfried) of San Antonio; six grandchildren, Tiffanie Stegall Clausewitz (Eric) of San Antonio, James Aubrey (Trey) Stegall, III (Becky) of Houston, Jerrett Lee Helmick (Pattie) of Bishop, Brannon Craig Stegall (Rosemary) of San Antonio, Andrew Michael Stegall of Austin, and Brianna Felder Hellman (Chris) of Corpus Christi; and fourteen great-grandchildren, including one due this month. Inez was preceded in death by her husband, James Aubrey Stegall; parents, Letha and William Knox; siblings, Jody Adams, Bill Knox, Ione Knox, and Howard Knox; and son-in-law, Danny Felder.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, at Holmgreen Mortuary in Alice, Texas. A rosary will be recited at 7 pm at Holmgreen Mortuary.
Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Alice Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Trey Stegall, Jerrett Helmick, Brannon Stegall, Andy Stegall, Eric Clausewitz, and Chris Hellman.
The family wishes to thank everyone who cared for Inez during the last years of her life. Special thanks to the caregivers from Cimarron Place and Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital, and to Paula and John Forbus for providing companionship and comfort during Inez’s final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Women’s Auxiliary of Alice Christus Spohn Hospital, St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, or the charity of your choice.
