City officials took the time during Small Business Saturday to recognize mom and pop stores as a way to promote local shopping.

Some of the stores they visited included Gilbert's Fine Jewelry, Chateau Jolie, Edwards Furniture Co. and Ray Vess Jewelry store.

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, small businesses employ 67 percent of the country’s workforce. Statistics such as that, make last weekend's "Small Business Saturday" even more valuable in small cities such as Alice.

American Express created the post-Black Friday event in 2010 to encourage people across the country to support small local businesses in their community. In 2014, American Express estimated that $14.3 billion was spent at a small business during Small Business Saturday.
