Commissioner Sid Miller with Texas Department of Agriculture was in town Friday to assist rural economic development through grants totaling $600,000.
Jim Wells County Precinct 1 received a grant for $300,000 and the City of Premont was issued another grant in the same amount.
Both grants will assist to improve water systems in those areas. Precinct 1 will replace old 2-inch water lines to 12-inch water lines on McMasters Road from Corina to Gunn streets. The City of Premont will use their funds to remove water lines under homes and re-direct them, which will allow for better flow.
